The film recounts life in the Sicilian town of Baaria, from the 1920s to present day, through the eyes of lovers Peppino (Francesco Scianna) e Mannina (Margareth Made). A legend thronged with heroes … A Sicilian family depicted across three generations: from Cicco to his son Peppino to his grandson Pietro… Touching lightly upon the private lives of these characters and their families, the film evokes the loves, dreams and disappointments of an entire community in the Palermo province between the 1930s and the 1980s.

村裡唯一的老醫生，竟然神秘失蹤……
一個偏遠的村莊裡，只剩下年邁的長者，村裡的醫療也僅由一位資深的醫生（笑福亭鶴瓶飾演）負責，從接生、高血壓、心臟病到老年癡呆症，大病小病一手包辦，高明的醫術讓全村奉為神明。老醫生不僅關心村民的健康，還會陪老人們聊心事，村民都十分喜愛。某日，從外地前來實習的年輕醫生（瑛太飾演）來到村裡，開始鄉野見習的生活，卻意外發現老醫師來到小村莊的秘密……
The film begins with the sudden disappearance of Ino, the only doctor in a small, rural village. We then flash back to two months earlier, when a young intern from Tokyo arrives in a red convertible for his residency with Ino. Through the intern’s eyes, we see a portrait of a kindhearted country doctor revered as a savior by the villagers. But when Ino and an elderly female patient decide to keep her potentially fatal illness hidden from her family, Ino’s own secrets start to slowly unravel, and force everyone to question whether a lie is a sin if told in the name of compassion. What begins as a DOC HOLLYWOOD-like comedy soon evolves into an affecting drama about life in the face of death (much like the recent Oscar-winning DEPARTURES), before shifting into a wholly original, provocative examination of ethics and humanity.

冒著不純的危險

電影是一種「不純」的藝術，它一直無法擺脫向戲劇、攝影、音樂…等其他藝術借用語言的命運。正是因為它的不純，缺乏完全獨立的特質，以致打從電影誕生開始，它是不是一門藝術就一直是爭論不休的議題。不純，因此在某種程度下，成了電影的原罪。但有理論家認為（尤其是以法國哲學家為首，例如：André Bazin、Alain Badiou、Jacques Rancière…等，一再接力闡述的概念），正是這種不純的特性，使得電影在各種藝術當中獨樹一幟，甚至認為它就是藝術的「現代性」當中最明顯的特徵。但問題來了，當電影要拍其他藝術時，不純的電影如何去拍其他「純」的藝術？它如何能拍到藝術最純的部分，也就是與透明的形式合為一體的主旨，藝術之所以是藝術的「意念」？或者換個方式問，一個電影導演如何拍另一位藝術家以另一種媒介來創作？他是否可能拍到這個藝術家正在發展中的概念，同時，經由這個過程，向我們揭露電影本身「不純」的特性？
