Synopsis："Casuistry；The Art of Killing a Cat scratches" its way beneath the surface of an infamous Toronto animal cruelty case, deftly exploring the opaque logic surrounding this macabre act.
Jesse Power, ex-vegetarian, was an art student when he conceived a new project. In May 2001, he enlisted two friends, Anthony Wennekers and Matthew Kaczorowski, to help him kill a cat. The intention was to make a video that protested the unthinking consumption of factory-slaughtered animals by killing, cooking and eating a cherished domestic pet - a feline posthumously named Kensington by animal-rights activists. Alerted by an outraged roommate, the police found the skinned and decapitated cat in the beer fridge. Kaczorowski fled and was apprehended in Vancouver two years later. All three eventually pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and mischief charges.
This film has been selected in consultation with the Festival's Canadian Film Selection Committee.
The Director：Zev Asher was born in Montreal. He made his directorial debut with the short documentary Rat Art: Croatian Independents (97). His first feature documentary, What About Me: The Rise of the Nihilist Spasm Band (00), played as part of the Festival Perspective Canada programme in 2000; Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat (04) is his second feature film.

The Director：Chris Landreth went into animation as a second career after a stint as an engineer. In order to test and abuse the well-mannered animation softare, he began making animated short film in 1995. He's received numerous awards including an Academy Award nomination.

The Director: Laurence Green's first foray into documentary, the autobiographical Reconstruction, won eight major awards. His Thin Ice (NFB) is an adaptation of New York satirist Bruce McCall's memoir and was called the "Canadian Crumb" by Rick Moranis. With Alter Egos, Green continues to present provocative and poetic images from the home movies of our collective memories as he explores notions of family, personal history and identity. Icons are turned into anti-heroes in works that reveal the ambivalence and discord often hidden beneath reality. Green also writes for a number of film magazines and teaches at York University.

Synopsis：Having a difficult time accepting the reality of death and feeling regretful of his past, a man dying of cancer tries to find peace in his last moments. His estranged son, ex-wife, ex-lovers and old friends will all come to him to share his last breath.

The Director：One of the more important filmmakers to emerge in Quebec in the 1960s, Denys Arcand became interested in film at Universite de Montreal where he studied history and made his first film. He joined the National Film Board after graduation where he made a number of short documentaries as well as his feature-length and highly controversial documentary about the textile industry in Quebec, On est au coton. Made in 1970, the NFB did not release it until 1976. Arcand's experience in making this film and its subsequent fallout are reflected to a certain degree in a later film, Gina.

His film Stardom was chosen to close the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. In 2003 Denys returned to Cannes with Les Invasions barbares - Le declin continue. Denys Arcand was awarded Best Director honors for this film, titled The Barbarian Invasions - The Decline Continues, in English. The Barbarian Invasions also won Best Foreign Film at the 2004 Academy Awards and Denys was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. At home in Canada the film was honored as Best Film at the 2004 Genie Awards and Denys picked up Best Director and Best Original Screenplay awards.

Synopsis：Karen Cho, a fifth-generation Canadian of mixed heritage, discovered that half her family wasn’t welcome in the country they called home. While Canada encouraged and rewarded immigration from Europe, it imposed laws that singled out the Chinese as unwanted and unwelcome. Cho’s film, In the Shadow of Gold Mountain, takes her from Montreal to Vancouver to uncover stories from the last living survivors of the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act.

The Director：Karen Cho has made five short films. In 2001, she graduated from Concordia University's film production program, where she received the Mel Hoppenheim Award. Karen worked as a production intern through the Canadian Film and Television Producer’s Association’s (CFTPA) National Internship Program. In 2003, she was the winner of the NFB’s Reel Diversity Competition. The result was the chance to direct In the Shadow of Gold Mountain, her first professional documentary.Karen's films often explore personal relationships, identity and people challenging society's conventions.

Synopsis：Elegantly structured into three chapters entitled "love," "recollection" and "redemption," Hardwood is a personal journey by director Hubert Davis, the son of former Harlem Globetrotter Mel Davis, who explores how his father's decisions affected his life.Now a coach for young basketball players in Vancouver, Mel recalls falling in love with Hubert's mother, a white woman, at a time when racism made their union impossible, and his subsequent marriage to a black woman and the birth of their son. Both women in Mel's life, the mothers of his two sons, speak movingly about love and betrayal, and both sons speak of the pain of their absent father and its effect on their mothers.
The Director：Hubert Davis received a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in Film and Communications, then continued with creative writing at the University of British Columbia under screenwriter Peggy Thompson (The Lotus Eaters, Better than Chocolate). He worked as an assistant editor on Deepa Mehta's Bollywood/Hollywood and The Republic of Love. Since 2002, Davis has edited more than 30 commercials and music videos at Toronto's Panic and Bob Editing.

Synopsis:In 1994, approximately eight hundred thousand people were brutally slaughtered in Rwanda. Most belonged to the Tutsi tribe, though many of the victims were moderate Hutus who refused to participate in the genocide. The horrific nature of this event was exacerbated by the outside world's indifference. As embassies were swiftly evacuated and multinational companies pulled up stakes, the only international presence left (and the only possible sanctuary) was a small United Nations force - but it was hamstrung by that organization's inability or refusal to act.

Their leader was Canadian Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire, who - despite suggestions that he depart as well - insisted on staying. Synopsis：In the 17th century, a Jesuit priest escorted through the wilderness of Quebec by Huron Indians to find a distant mission in the dead of winter. The Jesuit experiences a spiritual journey while his young companion falls in love with the Huron chief's beautiful daughter underneath the imposing and magnificent mountains. Dread and death follows them upriver.

The Director：Bruce Beresford was born in Australia and graduated from Sydney University in 1962. He served as Film Officer for the British Film Institute Production Board from 1966-1971 and as a Film Advisor to the Arts Council of Great Britain. Beresford has also directed several operas including Girl Of The Golden West (Puccini), staged for the Spoleto Festival in Charleston and Spoleto (Italy) and Elektra (Strauss), which was staged for the State Opera Company of South Australia and performed in Adelaide and Melbourne. It won the Award for Best Opera Production of 1991. Immediately prior to starting production on PARADISE ROAD, Beresford directed SWEENEY TODD for the Portland Opera in Oregon.

Synopsis：Ann Marie Fleming's first feature documentary (she's best known for experimental shorts). The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam ,her personal quest to unravel the truth about her great grandfather, a world famous, globe-hopping Chinese vaudeville magician and acrobat. The film has since won a multitude of awards, along with having appeared on television in both Canada and the US.

The Director：Ann Marie Fleming has written, directed and produced over 20 films, incorporating various techniques such as animation, documentary, experimental and dramatic. Her work has been screened at film festivals around the world, including Berlin, Toronto and Sydney. Fleming's film Blue Skies, a personal response to the events of 9-11, won best Canadian short film at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival.
