Foreword to the POP Cinema
What relationship there should be between culture and business might be a complex question , but most people agree that there cannot only be commercial concerns for culture, because culture has its own unique and independent values.
And so is cinema.
In order to create better screening opportunities for domestic and foreign non-commercial films, the Council for Culture Affairs and the Government Information Office enthusiastically advance the POP Cinema program, tapping into local resources. By means of a lasting public screening channel, not only good films are given publicity but also viewers are granted access to more diverse films.
As one of the originators of POP Cinema, we sincerely hope that this program will serve to instill fresh life force into the Taiwanese film culture and to spread high-quality films out of Taipei , into the whole country form north to south.
