Director Kore-eda Hirokazu, known for such films as Nobody Knows and Still Walking, adapts Gouda Yoshiie's short manga "The Pneumatic Figure of a Girl" into this fantasy-romance. The relations between the ultra-real doll with a heart and her lonely companions is visualized with an intertwining sense of buoyancy and eroticism. Starring in her second Japanese film since Linda Linda Linda is accomplished Korean actress Bae Doona. Taiwanese cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bin beautifully captures the subtler characteristics of Tokyo's urban scenery. Middle-aged Hideo (Itao Itsuji) lives in an old apartment with his blow-up doll Nozomi (Bae). One morning, she suddenly grows a heart. While Hideo is out at work Nozomi cheerfully dresses up in a French maid's outfit and enjoys walks through the neighbourhood with the curiosity of a child. She ends up at a local video shop where Junichi (Arata) works and falls in love at first sight. Nozomi herself begins working at the shop out of love and discovers the transient nature of human emotions, but also feels the same emptiness in her heart that Junichi does.
